RUSTON, La. -- Stephen F. Austin captured the early doubles point, but managed just one victory in the singles competition as the Ladyjacks' five-match winning streak came to an end in a 4-2 loss at Louisiana Tech.
"I'm really proud of the girls for competing at a high level once again," said head coach Roberto Aspillaga. "Today was an incredibly challenging match, away from home, after a long and physical match against Northwestern State and the girls put up another great fight. Louisiana Tech is a very well-coached team with a lot of depth and we did a great job pushing them against the fence."
SFA opened up the day on a high note, taking two of the three doubles matches to secure the early point. Valeria Terentyeva and Vivienne Kulicke won the No. 3 spot 8-5, then saw Malena Gordo and Dhanielly Quevedo outlast the Lady Techsters 9-7 in the No. 1 spot to secure the win.
The Ladyjacks then battled Louisiana Tech in the singles matches, but were only able to take one victory as Gordo outlasted Alexandra Starkova 7-5, 0-6, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot. Macarena Sedano Acosta pushed Manoela Chiacchio to three sets, falling 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 6 spot while No. 4 Valeria Terentyeva was in the third set when her match was called.
While the victory snaps SFA's five-game winning streak, the Ladyjacks earned a bit of good news on the day as with A&M-Corpus Christi's 4-3 win over Nicholls, SFA now finds itself in sole possession of first place in the Southland Conference standings at 4-0. SFA heads to Louisiana this weekend for a pair of key SLC matches, facing Southeastern Louisiana Friday and New Orleans Saturday.
"I'm looking forward to our matches against Southeastern and New Orleans this weekend," Aspillaga said. "The girls are playing well and having fun, and the process has been very rewarding for everyone."
