BANDON, Ore. - Battling a challenging field and less than ideal weather conditions, Stephen F. Austin closed out the 2015 Bandon Dunes Championship ninth among the 16-team field. Senior Blake Pugh paced the Lumberjacks, tying for sixth among the 91-player field.
After waiting out a lengthy weather delay Saturday, SFA returned to the course and posted a 13-over 301 in round two, adding 11 strokes to its opening round 290. The `Jacks were looking to make a push over the final 18 holes Sunday, but the final round was cancelled due to heavy rains and strong winds along the Oregon coast.
The Lumberjacks finished six shots back of eighth-place Utah Valley (9-over 585) and were nine shots back of both UC Davis and San Jose State (6-over 582), both of which tied for sixth overall. SFA edged out 10th-place Hartford (16-over 592), leading a five-team logjam that was separated by just four strokes.
Pugh recorded the ninth top-10 finish of his SFA career, tying for sixth overall with a 2-under 142. The senior posted back-to-back 1-under 71s on the weekend, finishing among a five-player tie for sixth. Pugh was four shots back of the tournament winner as his 142 sets a new career-low for a 36-hole tournament.
Freshman Tony Underwood had an impressive showing as well, notching the first top-20 finish of his career with a 1-over 145, tying for 19th overall. Underwood posted a 1-over 73 in round two, coming on the heels of his even-par 72 in round one.
Junior Nathan Weant finished with a 7-over 151 (71-80), two shots better than junior Luke Sheehan's 9-over 153 (76-77). Sophomore Baxter Ward rounded out the SFA scorecard with a 14-over 158 (77-81).
Duke and Missouri tied for the team title in the weather-shortened event as the Blue Devils and Tigers posted a 1-under 575. The duo led third-place St. Mary's (1-over 577) by two shots with both Colorado and Washington State (3-over 579) tying for fourth overall.
The tournament begins a challenging spring for SFA who play six events over the final six weeks of the season. Up next for the Lumberjacks is a trip to Delhi, Louisiana, competing in the ULM Fred Marx Invitational next Monday and Tuesday.
