CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Stephen F. Austin opened up its 2015 Southland Conference schedule on a high note, earning a convincing 4-1 road victory over A&M-Corpus Christi.
"We knew how important this match was going to be for us," said head coach Roberto Aspillaga. "We lost 4-3 against them last year, just by a couple of inches, and I felt the girls did an unbelievable job handling the pressure. It took an important collective effort across the board to get a way with this win. The fact that we were able to close the match while Malena was still playing says it all. Everybody contributed and I am incredibly proud of the girls for that."
Beginning with the doubles competition, SFA opened up the day with a win at the No. 3 position as Vivienne Kulicke and Valeria Terentyev won 8-6, offsetting the loss at No. 2 with Denise Maxl and Macarena Sedano Acosta falling 8-1. The No. 1 doubles team of Malena Gordo and Dhanielly Quevedo was able to earn the crucial point for the Ladyjacks, winning 8-7 (7-2).
Heading into singles play, A&M-Corpus earned its sole point of the day as Julia Lorca fell in the No. 6 position 6-0, 6-3. Maxl got SFA back on track with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 2 position, followed by victories from No. 5 Terentyeva (6-3, 6-4) and No. 4 Quevedo (2-6, 6-4, 6-2) to secure the win for the Ladyjacks.
The victories left No. 1 Gordo and No. 3 Kulicke's matches left unfinished as Gordo was trailing 5-7, 7-5, 0-1 with Kulicke at 3-6, 6-5 as the match wrapped up.
With the win, SFA now heads up I-37 to San Antonio for a Saturday doubleheader. The Ladyjacks face SLC foe Incarnate Word at 10 a.m. before heading across town for a 4 p.m. date with UT-San Antonio.
