NEW ORLEANS - For the second-straight game, the eighth inning proved disastrous for Stephen F. Austin as the Lumberjacks blow a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning, falling to New Orleans 3-2 at Maestri Field.
The Lumberjacks fell to 5-14 on the year and remain winless in Southland Conference play, sitting at 0-4 in conference play.
Leading 2-0 heading into the eighth, New Orleans used a one-out double to right to pull to within one at 2-1. Another single put runner at the corners, but a fielder's choice groundout at second had SFA just one out from escaping the threat. The Privateers then ripped a single to center, but an error on Matthew Dickey allowed both baserunners to score, giving New Orleans the 3-2 victory.
Cameron Gann took the hard luck loss despite allowing no runs on six hits through the first seven innings against the Privateers. Tyler Wiedenfeld also pitched the final two innings of the eighth inning, allowing one hit on the night, but it was a costly one.
SFA got on the board first behind a solo shot from Garrett McMullen in the top of the second inning, his team-leading third of the season. The Lumberjacks then loaded the bases in the top of the fourth as Eric DeJesus was able to draw a 3-2 walk, bringing Tyler Boxwell home, but that was the only offense the Lumberjacks were able to muster as SFA recorded just two hits on the night.
SFA looks to bounce back Saturday afternoon for the second game of the three-game series against New Orleans. LHP Dillon Mangham will get the start for the Lumberjacks with the first pitch against the Privateers schedule for 2 p.m.
