NEW ORLEANS, La. - Dillon Mangham went the distance for Stephen F. Austin, throwing the complete game shutout, while the Lumberjacks added three runs of support in the sixth as the `Jacks defeat New Orleans 3-0. The Lumberjacks improved to 6-14 on the year and notch their first Southland Conference victory in the process.
Mangham was the work horse for the Lumberjacks on the afternoon, allowing just four hits with no runs, eight strikeouts and one walk on 121 pitches to pick up the win. It is the third complete game of Mangham's career and the first for SFA in 2015, lowering his ERA to 5.50.
After five scoreless innings, SFA broke things open in the sixth inning, scoring three runs on no hits to give Mangham all the support he would need. Kyle Thornell drove in the first run with a bases loaded fielder's choice, scoring Garrett McMullen. With the bases loaded, Tyler Boxwell drew the 3-1 walk, allowing Hunter Wilson to score, followed by a wild pitch that brought Thornell home from third.
Mangham had his shutout threatened in the bottom of the ninth as the Privateers were able to get runners on the corners with two outs. But the lefty ended the game with a swinging strikeout on a 3-2 pitch, preserving the `Jacks first SLC win of the season.
SFA knocked 10 hits on the afternoon, led by a pair each from Matthew Dickey and Hunter Wilson. Dickey also was successful on a stolen base attempt, upping his streak to a perfect 12-for-12 on the year and remaining the SLC's leader in swiped bags. McMullen, Thornell, Nick Ramos, Dan O'Neill, Eric DeJesus and Anthony Soriano also recorded hits on the afternoon for SFA.
The Lumberjacks now look to capture their second series of the season with the rubber game against New Orleans. First pitch against the Privateers is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Maestri Field.
