Ladyjacks Bounce Back, Beat TXST 5-2

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team bounced back from a tough loss on Saturday to claim a 5-2 win over Texas State on Sunday afternoon at Schlief Tennis Complex.
"This was an incredibly hard fought win," head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. "Texas State took the doubles point and carried that momentum into singles. It took an important collective effort across the board to turn it around.
"I am extremely proud of the girls for their resiliency today, especially after having a heartbreaking loss yesterday. It was very windy and we didn't play our best tennis, but we outcompeted Texas State, and that is something to be happy about."
SFA (3-2) tandem Dhanielly Quevedo and Malena Gordo picked up a 6-4 win in No. 1 doubles, but the Bobcats (0-2) claimed the opening point with 6-3 and 7-5 victories in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Quevedo and Gordo again delivered wins in singles play. Gordo defeated TXST's Monica Pieratt 7-5, 7-5 in No. 1 singles, while Quevedo battled Shannon Beckett for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win in No. 5 singles.
Ladyjacks Denise Maxl (6-2, 4-6, 6-4), Vivienne Kulicke (4-6, 6-4, 6-1) and Valeria Terentyeva (6-4, 6-2), also picked up wins across No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles to secure the victory.
"We have to be more aggressive in doubles and secure the first point more often, as it will take a lot of pressure away from the singles," Aspillaga said. "We will certainly focus in this during the week, as we prepare for a couple of tough matches at home next weekend"
SFA will close its four-match homestand next weekend. The Ladyjacks will host Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 10:30 a.m., before wrapping up with Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday.
