NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team picked up their second consecutive victory, defeating Louisiana-Lafayette 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
"It's very exciting to convincingly win against a team that not only beat us last year, but who is also two players stronger this season," head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. "The highlight of the day was the doubles. Louisiana-Lafayette's doubles is very strong, and we worked all week on specific game plans to take the first point. The girls did a great job executing and the scores show it.
"Now we have to focus on tomorrow's match against Louisiana-Monroe. They are a feisty team that is coming off a win over Northwestern State, and we will have to compete at a high level in order to get the win."
The Ladyjacks (4-2) got 6-1 and 6-2 wins from Dhanielly Quevedo and Malena Gordo (No. 1 doubles) and Vivienne Kulicke and Valeria Terentyeva (No. 3 doubles) to secure the opening point.
In singles play, Terentyeva again won her match, defeating Lafayette's (2-1) Alexandra Way 7-5, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. Sophomores Denise Maxl and Macarena Sedano Acosta also picked up wins to help secure the victory, with 6-3, 6-3 and 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 triumphs in No. 2 and No. 6 singles, respectfully.
SFA will close its four-match homestand on Sunday, Feb. 15, hosting Louisiana-Monroe. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
