INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Stephen F. Austin All-American Gus Johnson completed his workouts at the 2015 NFL Combine Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Johnson was one of 34 running backs invited to the combine and had a strong showing throughout the week.
Weighing in officially at 5-10, 215 pounds, Johnson took to the field Saturday to compete in the various combine drills with head coaches, general managers and representatives of all 32 NFL teams watching from the stands. In the 40-yard dash, the marquee event of the combine, Johnson ran a 4.70, sitting 23rd among the field of running backs.
But Johnson made his mark in other areas, catching attention from NFL teams in the bench press where he completed 26 reps at 225 pounds, tying for the second-best performance among all running backs at the combine. He was also strong in the 20-yard shuttle, running a 4.13 and posting the sixth-fastest time.
Johnson tied for eighth in the vertical jump, leaping 36.5 inches, while finishing 10th among running backs in the 60-yard shuttle with a time of 11.76. He also finished 11th among combine running backs in both the three cone drill (7.09) and broad jump (120.0 inches).
Earlier in the week, Johnson went through all of his physical examinations, as well as psychological testing through tests such as the Wonderlic. He also held interviews with both NFL team representative and the national media as he continues his pursuit of landing on an NFL roster.
SFA’s all-time leading rusher and the Southland Conference Player of the Year, Johnson has spent the last two months training in Houston to prepare for the combine, and now hopes all his hard work will pay off. Johnson will learn his football future awaiting the 2015 NFL Draft, being held April 30-May 2 in Chicago.
