SFA Picks Up Third Straight, Beat ULM 4-3

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F Austin women’s tennis team picked up their third straight victory in a 4-3 triumph over Louisiana-Monroe on Sunday afternoon at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
“This was a great win for the team,” head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. “I am incredibly proud for the effort the girls are putting in. Louisiana-Monroe never gave up and certainly gave us nothing for free. Ultimately, what allowed us to break through was the quality doubles we played, as well as the heroic performance of Malena to close the match. She certainly showed everybody the kind of experience that comes with being No. 35 in the world in juniors.”
With the win over ULM (4-2), the Ladyjacks (5-2) closed their four-match homestand with a 3-1 mark.
SFA picked up a pivotal opening point, coming from behind in doubles to take a 1-0 lead. After falling 9-7 in No. 1 doubles, Valeria Terentyeva and Vivienne Kulicke picked up a 8-6 win in No. 3 doubles, before Denise Maxl and Macarena Sedano Acosta (No. 2 doubles) followed with an 8-6 victory of their own to win doubles 2-1.
The Ladyjacks then followed with wins from Maxl (No. 1 singles), Kulicke (No. 4 singles) and Malena Gordo (No. 2 singles) to secure the 4-3 win.
Kulicke opened up singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win over ULM’s Anandhi Botha. After Maxl followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Amy Oliver, the Warhawks won No. 3 (6-2, 6-0), No. 5 (6-4, 6-1) and No. 6 singles (4-6, 6-1, 6-0) to take even the match 3-3.
In No. 2 singles, Gordo secured the victory with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Sophie Rufyikiri to close the match.
SFA will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 22, playing at Tulsa in an 11 a.m. match.
