HOUSTON – Stephen F. Austin went 3-2 over the second day of the SHSU Track Kat Klash as the Ladyjacks sit fourth in the team standings with a 193.3 average following the traditional team round. SFA’s day included a win over fourth-ranked Nebraska as the pair of losses came to the host Bearkats.
Sophomore Stephanie Schwartz finished the day fourth in the individual standings as well with a 212.80 average, earning the fourth all-tournament honor of her career. She also bowled the high game of the day among all competitors, a 259 in the win over the Cornhuskers, as teammates Kelsi Anderson (16th) and Paige Kraushaar (17th) both finished among the individual top-20.
Making the shift to traditional team matches Saturday, SFA drew its Piney Woods rival in the opening match of the day, dropping a 1,099-960 decision to the host Bearkats. Schwartz got her day started off on a positive note, bowling a 226, with Anderson adding a 222 to lead the Ladyjacks. Paige Beeney just missed cracking the 200-pin mark as well, recording a 197 in the loss.
SFA got back to its winning ways in match two, cruising past Grambling State 927-645. Danielle Lynn led the Ladyjacks with a 214 in her first match of the day as Kraushaar’s 200 helped lead SFA to the victory.
The Ladyjacks then drew Jackson State in match three and recorded another comfortable victory with a 927-645 win over the Tigers. Lynn once again led the way for SFA, bowling a 215, and edging out Schwartz’ 213 to notch her second-straight game of leading the Ladyjacks.
SFA then squared off with Nebraska in a rematch of last year’s NCAA championship as the Ladyjacks put together the most complete game of the day, defeating the Cornhuskers 1,041-940. Schwartz’ tournament-high 259 set the tone while Kraushaar bowled a day-best 234 to help SFA pull away. Lynn just missed joining the 200-pin club, finishing with a 198 in the victory.
The final match of the day mirrored the first as the Ladyjacks and Bearkats met again to determine seeding for Sunday’s bracket play. Unfortunately for SFA, the end result was the same as SHSU took a 1,038-940 decision over the Ladyjacks. Morgan Reising made the most of her lone game of action, bowling a team-best 223, with Anderson’s 204 and Schwartz’s 193 keeping the Ladyjacks in the match.
SFA’s fourth-place showing puts the Ladyjacks in contention for the tournament title Sunday as the format switches to the best-of-seven baker style bracket. The fourth-seeded Ladyjacks square off with Central Missouri in the opening match of the day at 8:30 a.m. Sam Houston State and Nebraska are on the opposite side of the bracket with the winner of LIU-Brooklyn and Adelphi awaiting the loser of the SFA-UCM match.
