HOUSTON – Stephen F. Austin dropped the opening two matches over the final round of the SHSU Track Kat Klash, then rallied for a thrilling victory in the final match of the day to place fifth at the event. The eighth-ranked Ladyjacks went 8-6 over the three-day event, pushing their overall season record to 24-16.
Sitting fourth in the team standings after Saturday’s round, SFA found itself in the championship bracket, facing Central Missouri in the opening round. SFA had impressive showings in the first and third games, then took a 230-189 decision in the fifth to open up a 3-2 lead on the Jennies. But UCM rallied for a pair of victories over the final two games, taking the match 4-3 and dropping SFA out of the championship bracket.
The Ladyjacks then drew fifth-seeded LIU-Brooklyn as SFA struggled to find its groove, dropping all four games to the Blackbirds. SFA managed just a 200 in game two and a 202 in game four, but were unable to take any of the four games.
The final match of the day pitted SFA against Adelphi in a fight for fifth-place and the losing skid continued for the Ladyjacks as SFA dropped the first two games against the Panthers to extend its streak to eight games. The Ladyjacks ended that skid with a 200-177 decision in game three, but fell 209-205 in game four to fall behind 3-1 in the series. But SFA closed out the weekend strong by rallying to win the final three games 213-162, 211-191 and 191-183 to secure the fifth-place showing.
It is a familiar finish for SFA as the Ladyjacks have now finished fifth in three of the five SHSU Track Kat Klashes, matching its result from 2011 and 2015. The win secures the Ladyjacks’ second top-five finish of the season after placing fifth at the season-opening Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational in October.
The tournament closes the books on the 2015 calendar year for the Ladyjacks as SFA turns its sights to a busy 2016, preparing the final seven tournaments of the year in a three-month span. The Ladyjacks return to action after the extended winter break on January 15, 2016, competing in the Arkansas State Mid-Winter Classic in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
