NACOGDOCHES, Texas – With workouts in full swing and finals drawing ever closer, the Stephen F. Austin track and field teams still found some time to give back to the Nacogdoches community recently, coming together to spend a day working with Habitat for Humanity.
A total of over 100 student-athletes and coaches pitched in during the workday, fixing up a house near the SFA campus and also helping out at the Habitat ReStore in town.
“I think it’s the responsibility of every athletic program and every department on campus to give back to the community in one way or another,” said head track and field coach Phil Olson. “This was just our small way of doing that. We’ve wanted to work with the Nacogdoches Habitat for Humanity for some time. It’s a great organization and they do wonderful things.
“It’s a very humbling experience for our athletes and coaches to go out on a Saturday morning, working side by side, and fix up a house that’s in disrepair so a family can move into it. Being able to shape it up, do some painting and cleaning, and restore the home to good order was rewarding and it was a really good opportunity for our kids. They had a lot of fun, were very positive and enjoyed the work.”
The 2016 indoor track and field season will start up in early January as the ‘Jacks are set to begin their quest to defend their Southland Conference titles. SFA won four team championships in 2015 – both the indoor and outdoor crowns on the men’s and women’s side. A complete schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
