FRISCO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin junior quarterback Zach Conque has been named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, presented by UniversalCoin.com and announced today by the league office. It is the second SLC weekly honor of Conque’s career and the first for the Lumberjacks in 2015.
Conque guided a balanced and efficient SFA offense in the 55-20 win over Houston Baptist, accounting for 323 yards of total offense and five touchdowns. Playing just two and a half quarters, Conque completed 20 of his 30 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns while rushing four times for 53 yards and two scores as well.
Behind Conque’s leadership, the Lumberjacks racked up a season-high 671 yards of total offense, rushing for 343 while passing for 328. Taking a 20-10 lead into halftime, Conque helped engineer a 28-point third quarter, helping the ‘Jacks pull away from the Huskies.
The junior from Little Rock has thrown for 1,765 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2015 while rushing for 506 yards and 10 scores. Conque continues to move up the charts among the all-time SFA greats as he ranks among the top 10 in five different career statistical categories as he is one of just five quarterbacks at the Division I level (both FBS and FCS) that has both passed and rushed for at least 20 touchdowns since the start of the 2014 season.
Lamar’s Brendan Langley was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week with Central Arkansas’ Jace Denker capturing Special Teams honors. SFA kicker Mason Juhl was also tabbed an honorable mention selection for special teams honors. Conque also garnered SLC Player of the Week honors from College Sports Madness Sunday.
Conque and the rest of the Lumberjacks are preparing for the 2015 season finale as SFA will do battle with border rival Northwestern State in the 50th Battle for Chief Caddo Saturday. Kickoff against the Demons is set for 3 p.m. at Turpin Stadium in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
