NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Stephen F. Austin opened up to a slow start at the 2015 Fairleigh Dickinson New Jersey Jamboree as the Ladyjacks posted a 2-3 mark over the opening day of competition. SFA sits 12th among the 26-team field, posting a 187.8 average through the first five matches.
Individually, sophomore Stephanie Schwartz posted the highest average of the day for the Ladyjacks at 201.6 with 1,008 total pins, sitting 23rd among the team standings. Junior Kiara Grant was the only other SFA bowler among the top-50, checking in at 44th overall with 971 pins and a 194.2 average.
In the opening match of the tournament, SFA drew 16th-ranked St. Francis (N.Y.) and struggled early, falling 920-869. Sophomore Morgan Reising bowled the high score of the game for the Ladyjacks with a 204, followed by a 185 from junior Paige Kraushaar and a 177 from Grant.
Round two pitted the Ladyjacks against fourth-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson, the host of the tournament, and the hometown lanes were favorable for the Knights as FDU handed SFA a 993-909 defeat. No Ladyjacks eclipsed the 200-pin plateau as Grant led the way with a 195, followed closesly behind by Kraushaar’s 192 and Schwartz’s 191.
SFA finally started to find its groove in round three as the Ladyjacks bowled a 1,086 – the fifth-highest game of the day – to defeat Caldwell 1,086-956. Four of the five SFA bowlers surpassed the 200-pin mark, led by Reising’s 244, the highest game of the day for the Ladyjacks. Schwartz posted a 235 with Grant’s 224 and senior Danielle Lynn’s 214 helping guide SFA to the victory.
SFA stumbled again in game four , dropping a 958-832 decision to 12th-ranked St. Francis (Pa.) and falling to 1-3 on the day. Once again, SFA failed to reach the 200-pin mark as Schwartz’s 188 was the tops among the Ladyjack bowlers, just ahead of Kraushaar’s 186 and Grant’s 185.
Despite a frustrating day, SFA closed out day one on a high note, posting a convincing 1,000-870 win over 10th-ranked North Carolina A&T. Schwartz led the way with a 237 while freshman Paige Beeney bowled a 234 seeing her first action of the tournament. Grant added a 190 for the Ladyjacks who reached the 2-3 mark after day one.
Saturday’s round is comprised of five more traditional matches as SFA opens up the day facing 18th-ranked Kutztown in the first game. The Ladyjacks will then bowl No. 17 Delaware State, Franklin Pierce and Saint Peter’s before closing out the day with seventh-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater. SFA is aiming to make a run at the leaders, hoping to jump into the top six spots to give it a chance at the tournament title Sunday morning.
