KENNER, La. – Stephen F. Austin closed out the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational with a fifth-place showing in the season-opening event. SFA went 1-2 in the best-of-seven baker style bracket play, closing out the three-day event with an overall record of 10-4.
Entering Sunday’s bracket play as the number four overall seed, SFA met up with third-seeded Vanderbilt in round one, dropping a 4-0 decision to the Commodores. The Ladyjacks came up short of the 200-pin mark in each of the four games while Vandy bowled over 200 in three of the four to earn the victory.
SFA then met up with fifth-seeded Nebraska in round two and fell behind 3-0 early to the Cornhuskers. The Ladyjacks responded in games five and six, defeating the reigning national champions 191-186 and 193-168, but they were unable to keep the momentum going, dropping the sixth 204-158 as Nebraska clinched the match.
The final match of the day pitted SFA against sixth-seeded North Carolina A&T as the Ladyjacks were seeking a top-five finish to begin the 2015-16 season. SFA won the opener 165-154 before falling 170-165 in round two. SFA bowled its best game of the day in game three, defeating N.C. A&T 219-202, and that seemed to spark the Ladyjacks who took the next two 182-171 and 158-155 to clinch fifth among the 15-team field.
It was a strong showing for SFA as the Ladyjacks relied heavily on true freshmen Paige Beeney and Dakotah Hazelwood, who were competing in their first collegiate events. SFA was also without All-American Stephanie Schwartz for the weekend as the sophomore is expected to be back for the Ladyjacks’ next tournament.
Piney Woods rival Sam Houston State captured the team title at the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational, defeating Arkansas State 4-2 in the championship match. Nebraska finished third, defeating Vanderbilt 4-1 in the consolation bracket, to join SFA in the top-five. North Carolina A&T, Prairie View A&M, Tulane, Jackson State and Texas Southern closed out the top-10.
The Ladyjacks return to action in two weeks, traveling to North Brunswick, New Jersey, for the 2015 Fairleigh Dickinson New Jersey Jamboree October 30th to November 1st. The tournament will be held at the Brunswick Zone Carolier Lanes, the same facility that will host the 2016 NCAA Championships in April.
