KENNER, La. – Stephen F. Austin posted another strong day at the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational, posting a 5-1 mark on the day to improve to 9-2 through the first two days of the event. The Ladyjacks sit fourth in the team standings, averaging 191.5 pins per game.
The 9-2 record through the first two days is second in terms of win-loss among the 15-team field, trailing only the 10-1 mark posted by first-place Arkansas State, as SFA’s 191.5 average is three pins back of third-place Vanderbilt’s 194.5. Individually, freshman Paige Beeney has had a strong start to her collegiate career, ranking eighth overall in scoring average at 204.5, with junior Paige Kraushaar sitting 14th at 199.7.
After winning the final four matches Friday, SFA continued their winning streak in the team games, opening up the day with a 974-796 victory over Florida A&M. Three Ladyjacks eclipsed the 200-pin mark, led by Beeney’s team-high 208 and followed by a 208 from junior Kiara Grant and a 206 from sophomore Kelsi Anderson.
Match two pitted SFA against its opponent from last year’s NCAA national championship bout as the Ladyjacks did battle with top-ranked Nebraska. The Ladyajcks got a little bit of payback against the Huskers, defeating Nebraska 951-859, led by a 211 from Beeney and 201 from Kraushaar as all five SFA bowlers notched a 176 or higher.
Up next for SFA was a matchup with Prairie View A&M as the Ladyjacks topped the Panthers 964-884. Kraushaar had the high game for SFA with a 226 as she was the only bowler to surpass 200 with freshman Dakotah Hazelwood bowling a 196 for the Ladyjacks.
Round four was another victory for SFA as the Ladyjacks extended their winning streak to eight matches, defeating Alabama State in convincing fashion, 976-783. Beeney once again led the Ladyjacks with a 213, followed by a 211 from Anderson as SFA improved to 8-1 in the tournament.
SFA stumbled in round five, dropping a 998-960 match to 10th-ranked North Carolina A&T to halt its winning streak. Kraushaar bowled a 222 for SFA but was the only Ladyjack to surpass 200, followed by a 199 from Grant.
The Ladyjacks rebounded in the final match of the day, bowling a day-high 1,026 to defeat fifth-ranked Vanderbilt 1,026-991. The freshmen led the way for the Ladyjacks against the Commodores as Beeney and Hazelwood both bowled career-highs, rolling a 233 and 224 respectively, improving SFA to 9-2 through the first two days of competition.
With SFA sitting fourth, it gives the Ladyjacks the chance to make a run at the tournament title Sunday as the teams begin the three best-of-seven baker match bracket play. SFA opens up competition with a rematch against third-seeded Vanderbilt with Arkansas State and Sam Houston State occupying the number one and two seeds.
