KENNER, La. – Third-ranked Stephen F. Austin recorded wins in its final four matches on the first day of the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational, going 4-1 over the first day of competition and sitting fifth among the 15-team field.
The Ladyjacks recorded 5,639 pins on the day, averaging a 188.0 in five baker-style matches. SFA is less than two pins off the average of fourth-place Nebraska (189.6) as the Ladyjacks were one of just three teams to record one or fewer losses on the day, joining Arkansas State (5-0) and Vanderbilt (5-1).
SFA’s first match of the 2015-16 season was a matchup with rival Sam Houston State as the Ladyjacks fell to their Piney Woods rival 996-841. SHSU took all five games of the match with the closest of the bout coming in game three as the Ladyjacks fell by just two at 156-154.
SFA regrouped in match two, edging out Jackson State 856-827. The Ladyjacks won the first three games 167-159, 160-149 and 182-152, then held on as the Tigers rallied to win the last two games 211-195 and 152-145. But the early margin was enough as SFA held on for its first win of the 2015-16 season.
After a bye in round three ,the Ladyjacks bowled their best game of the day, notching a dominating 1,084-807 victory over Southern as SFA eclipsed the 200-pin plateau in four of the five games. SFA put an exclamation point on the dominating victory in game five, posting a commanding 256-134 victory over the Jaguars.
SFA’s winning streak continued in round five, recording a 937-874 win over Texas Southern, its third-straight SWAC opponent. The Tigers took two of the first three games against the Ladyjacks, but SFA responded with a 225-166 win in game four, then closed out the match with a 173-153 victory in game five to improve to 3-1 on the day.
Day one in the Big Easy concluded the same way it started as the Ladyjacks and Bearkats met in the final match of the day. The rematch started out in similar fashion to the early match of the day as SHSU took the opener, but SFA responded to win the next two 261-255 and 190-159. The Bearkats won game four 211-194 and held a four-pin advantage heading into the final game of the day. But the Ladyjacks made key shots when it counted, including strikeout out in frame six, taking the fifth 248-225 to seal the match 1,076-1,057 and finish at 4-1 on the day.
The Ladyjacks made a statement on the day as the reigning national runners-up bowled the two highest games of the day. SFA's 1,084 against Southern was tops among all teams with the 1,076 against Sam Houston State ranking second. Arkansas State had the third-highest with a 1,065 against Prairie View A&M in round three.
Saturday’s action gets underway at 9 a.m. as the Ladyjacks will bowl six team games. That leads into Sunday’s best-of-seven bracket play as SFA will try to get into the top-four Saturday, giving them a chance at the tournament title Sunday morning.
