SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Stephen F. Austin successfully defended its UIW Lady Cardinal Classic title, taking two strokes from St. Edward’s and besting the Hilltoppers by one shot to capture the 2015 title. It marks the second team title for the Ladyjacks as the 29-over 597 is the lowest 36-hole tournament score in program history.
Trailing St. Edward’s by one shot heading into Tuesday, SFA posted a 17-over 301, then watched as the Hilltoppers finished with a 19-over 303, giving the Ladyjacks the one-stroke victory. The 597 goes down as the new low score for a 36-hole tournament for SFA, three shots better than the 600 the Ladyjacks posted at last season’s Texas State Delta Gamma Spring Challenge.
Junior Jessie White closed out the event in second place with a 1-under 141, firing a 1-over 72 over the final 18 holes. Already SFA’s all-time leader in top-10 finishes, it marks the seventh top-10 showing of White’s career and the sixth in her last nine events. It also shatters her previous-best in a 36 hole tournament, taking 11 strokes off her 152 at last year’s Delta Gamma Spring Challenge.
White was joined in the individual top-10 by three of her teammates, including senior Sydney Reed who tied for fourth overall with a 7-over 149 in her hometown, the third top-10 finish of her SFA career. Fellow senior Mackenzie Steiner also posted her third career top-10 finish, placing seventh overall with a 9-over 151 while sophomore Erica Lautensack tied for eighth as an individual, shooting an 11-over 153 for her fourth career top-10 finish.
Sophomore Jamee Jorgensen and junior Courtney Ford both tied for 14th with a 15-over 157, rounding out the Ladyjack scorecard in San Antonio. It was the third top-20 showing of Jorgensen’s career with Ford recording her second top-20 showing.
White led the tournament field with 25 pars on the par-71 course, followed by Reed’s 22 and Jorgensen’s 21. Steiner finished second among all golfers with seven total birdies, just ahead of the five carded by Reed and White. Lautensack was the top performer among the par threes, averaging a 2.80 per hole, with White the top golfer on par five’s (4.63) while placing second in the par four’s (3.94).
After playing three tournaments in consecutive weeks, SFA will have a little bit of recovery time before closing out the fall portion of its 2015-16 schedule at the UALR Women’s Invitational in Little Rock, Arkansas. The 54-hole event gets underway Monday, November 2, playing 18 holes per day before wrapping up on Wednesday, November 4.
