SAN ANTONIO – Looking to defend its 2014 title, Stephen F. Austin had a strong performance over the opening round of the 2015 UIW Lady Cardinal Classic. The Ladyjacks fired a 12-over 296 to sit second overall, trailing first-place St. Edward’s by one stroke.
The 296 matches the total SFA fired over the final round of last year’s event and is tied for the fourth-lowest round in program history behind a pair of 294’s and the 295 SFA shot earlier this season at the Bob Hurley ORU Shootout.
Junior Jessie White continues her solid play as the reigning Southland Conference champion fired a 2-under 69 in round one, setting a new career-low. It also tied for the second lowest single-season round in program history, two shots of the program-best 67 posted by Erica Lautensack in Tulsa earlier this year.
White is one of four Ladyjacks among the individual top-10 as San Antonio native Sydney Reed is fourth overall, shooting a 2-over 73 in her hometown. Fellow senior Mackenzie Steiner is one stroke back at 3-over 74, sitting tied for fifth overall, with sophomore Erica Lautensack tied for 10th with a 6-over 77.
Sophomore Jamee Jorgensen sits 18th overall, posting a 9-over 80 in round one, with junior Courtney Ford rounding out the Ladyjack scorecard with a 10-over 81, checking in at 19th overall.
White led all players with 13 pars on the day, one better than Reed, as she carded the lone eagle of the first round on the par-four seventh. Steiner ranked second among the tournament field with four birdies in round one, two better than Lautensack, Reed and White.
It appears as if it will be a two-team race for the title Tuesday as SFA and St. Edward’s are a stroke apart with 18 holes to play. Host Incarnate Word (26-over 310) is 14 strokes back of the second-place Ladyjacks with Murray State C.C. (47-over 331) and Texas A&M-International (58-over 342) rounding out the top-five.
Tuesday’s final round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. as the Ladyjacks will play with the Hilltoppers and Cardinals in the final round pairings. Full results will be posted at SFAJacks.com as they become available.
