SFA Fourth After Day One at Kutztown Invite

READING, Pa. – Opening up its second tournament in as many weekends, eighth-ranked Stephen F. Austin had another strong opening round, posting a 4-2 mark at the Kutztown Invitational. The Ladyjacks sit in fourth overall in the team standings, posting a 202.0 average through the first six matches.
Playing in six baker style matches in day one, SFA opened the tournament with a 1,053-876 defeat to St. Francis N.Y. The Ladyjacks opened up the match with a pair of 200-pin games but struggled down the stretch, dropping the final four games.
The Ladyjacks responded in the second match of the day, earning a convincing 1,181-937 victory over Cheyney as SFA surpassed the 200-pin plateau in all five games. The Ladyjacks didn’t drop a game against Cheyney, including games of 246, 245 and 244 to seal the victory.
SFA’s streak hit two as the Ladyjacks then defeated St. Francis (Pa.) 940-846, taking four of the five games of the match. SFA was paced by a 248-150 decision in game four and also surpassed 200 in game three, earning a 218-193 victory.
The Ladyjacks met up with sixth-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson in match four, falling 1,121-1,025. SFA came on strong in the final game, defeating FDU 245-199, but couldn’t overcome a pair of 257-pin performances as it dropped to 2-2 on the day.
SFA closed out the day with a pair of convincing victories, routing Mount Aloysius College 1,093-703 before taking down Medaille 946-791 to close out the day. The Ladyjacks notched a day-high 257 against MAC, surpassing the 200-pin mark in six of the final 10 games of the day to improve to 4-2 overall.
Central Missouri leads the team standings with a 5-1 record and a 214.6 average, just ahead of second-place Fairleigh Dickinson’ 210.2 average. Wisconsin-Whitewater (208.4) is third with Vanderbilt (201.3) rounding out the top-five after round one.
Saturday marks the second day of the Kutztown Invitational with the Ladyjacks getting set to compete in six traditional matches beginning with Adelphi. SFA also bowls Monmouth, Kutztown, LIU-Brooklyn and Seton Hall before closing out the day with a bye.
