QUICK NOTES
• The Stephen F. Austin women’s basketball team will travel to play Lamar and Sam Houston State this week for the second and third road games in a row. Andy Collins will have the call on Q107.7 FM (Q1077.com) when the Ladyjacks take the court.
• Thursday night’s contest will be the 64th meeting all-time between SFA and Lamar and Saturday’s game will be the 74th meeting between SFA and rival Sam Houston State. In both historic series, the Ladyjacks hold a comfortable edge, up 50-13 over Lamar and 63-10 over Sam Houston State. Over the last two-three years, however, both series have been much tighter. SFA and Lamar were Southland Conference co-champions last year.
• The Ladyjacks are coming off two conference victories last week against New Orleans and Abilene Christian. SFA cruised by UNO 76-56 at home on Thursday but experienced more resistance against ACU in Abilene on Saturday. Down three with about 30 seconds to play, Taylor Ross converted an ‘and one’ to tie the game and Porsha Roberts later hit a clutch free throw with three seconds to go to tie the score again and force overtime. Roberts scored six of the Ladyjacks’ seven points in OT to secure the 71-69 win. Overall on the afternoon, Roberts hit 10 of 11 shots from the field, scored 25 points and grabbed 13 boards.
• Lamar, picked to finish second/third in the SLC preseason polls, is playing great basketball so far in conference action. The Lady Cardinals have won three straight with wins over Central Arkansas, Southeastern Louisiana and on the road against then-unbeaten Northwestern State. The victory over the Lady Demons dropped NWLA to 5-1 in the league and bumped Lamar into a tie for first place. Lamar has shot 380 three-pointers on the year while shooting at a .318 clip.
• Sam Houston State, picked to finish 10th in both of the SLC preseason polls, has struggled to begin SLC play this season. The Bearkats have lost two straight, dropping games at Nicholls and McNeese State last week - both games were within five-point margins. SHSU’s only two conference wins have come against Incarnate Word and New Orleans this year. The Bearkats have turned the ball over 357 times for an average of 22.3 times per game.
• The Ladyjacks will play their third game in a row on the road on Saturday against Sam Houston State before returning to Nacogdoches for a date with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, Jan. 31. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
