
Grant First; SFA Third After Day One in Arkansas

JONESBORO, Ark. – Stephen F. Austin raced out to a quick start in the first tournament of the 2015 calendar year, posting a 3-1 mark through the opening round of the Mid-Winter Invitational. The Ladyjacks sit third among the 15-team field, averaging 197.9 through day one.
SFA totaled 4,947 pins on the day, trailing just first place Nebraska (5,114) and host Arkansas State (4,994). The Ladyjacks were nearly 30 pins better than fourth-place Maryland-Eastern Shore (4,919) and were 124 pins better than fifth-place Sam Houston State (4,823).
Individually, sophomore Kiara Grant leads the individual scoring with a 220.4 scoring average, including games of 268 and 267 on the day. Freshman teammate Stephanie Schwartz is fourth in the individual standings with a 214.2 average while senior Chelsea King is 11th overall, averaging 205.8 per game.
SFA opened up the tournament with a thrilling 912-911 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore, thanks to a 226 from Schwartz. Grant just missed cracking the 200-pin plateau, finishing with a 195 to help the Ladyjacks edge the Hawks for the win.
Round two pitted SFA against McKendree as the Ladyjacks fell 1,072-979. Grant posted her team-high 268 with King bowling a 235, her highest score of the day, but it wasn’t enough as SFA fell to 1-1 on the day.
After a bye round in which the Ladyjacks bowled a 1,126, highlighted by a 279 from Schwartz and a 267 from Grant, SFA found its momentum and bowled its way to a 995-947 victory over Alabama-Birmingham. Schwartz bowled her third 200-plus game, notching a 228, with Morgan Reising recording a 204 and King adding a 198.
The Ladyjacks then closed out the opening round with a 935-910 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater, pushing their record to 3-1 on the day. King led the way with a 210 for SFA while Grant notched a 202 to propel her into the top spot among the individual standings.
