NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team, after a week of rest, will head to LSU for a 6 p.m. match at the LSU Soccer Stadium on Monday night.
"With the week off, we’ve been able to get a couple players back from injury that we did not have the last three games,” head coach Wally Crittenden said. “I’m excited to see them come back into the lineup and to continue to work them into what we are doing. It is going to be a lot of fun going down to LSU. They will demand our best, just as we will demand theirs. This is a very exciting trip and there is no doubt we will be ready for it.”
NOTES:
• SFA vs. LSU - SFA and the Tigers will be meeting for the sixth time on the pitch when the two teams take the field on Monday night. LSU holds a 4-1 edge, but it was the Ladyjacks who prevailed in their last meeting. SFA defeated the Tigers 4-0 last season, the program’s first win over LSU. The Tigers and SFA have met three times in Baton Rouge, with LSU taking all three meetings. The Ladyjacks fell 6-0 in 1995 and dropped 2-1 decisions in both the 2004 and 2012 seasons.
• Scouting LSU - The Tigers enter the Monday match with a 3-2 mark on the season, with two of the wins coming against members of the Southland Conference. LSU, after opening the season with a 2-0 shutout of Troy, has since defeated Northwestern State 6-2 and Nicholls 3-0, with all three victories coming at home. In their two losses, the Tigers have been shutout, falling 1-0 to Rice and 2-0 to TCU. Sophomore forward Summer Clark leads the Tigers with eight points, with three goals and two assists through five starts. Freshman forward Jorian Baucom (three goals, one assist) and junior midfield Natalia Gomez-Junco (two goals, two assists) are just behind Clark, with seven and six points, respectfully.
• Looking Ahead - Following Monday’s tilt with LSU, the Ladyjacks will play one more match in Louisiana. SFA will face Louisiana-Monroe on Friday, in a 4 p.m. meeting at the ULM Soccer Complex.
• Crittenden On Last Time Out (vs. No. 25 Arkansas) - “We left the Arkansas match, stinging a bit. This team is hungry and wants to prove themselves, knowing both as a team and program how close we are. Against Arkansas, we were able to validate our athleticism, schemes and our high competitive character, which is what we’ve come to know from this group. The outcome of a match ultimately comes down to execution and that was one thing we talked with the team about. With the level that we want to go, it will come down to our execution and great moments that define games.”
• Raymond Climbing In The Record Books - Senior Chelsea Raymond, already the all-time goals leader (41) and shots leader (251) at SFA, is also nearing another milestone, career points. Currently with 94 total points (41 goals, 12 assists), Raymond is two four points away from the all-time mark established by former teammate Kylie Louw (96 points – 2009-12). Raymond also sits tied for seventh all-time with 12 assists in career.
• Climbing In Assists - Seniors Zuri Prince and Chelsea Raymond continue to climb the record book in assists. Prince entered the season with 13 assists and has since added three through the first four matches to move into third place all-time. Raymond has 12 career assists, good enough for a share of seventh all-time.
• Dunnigan SLC Defensive Player of the Week – Senior Megan Dunnigan took home the first Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor, after helping the Ladyjacks to a 1-1 start to the 2014 season. The native of Round Rock, Texas (Vista Ridge HS), captained the SFA back line to a 2-0 shutout of Oregon State for the program’s first-ever win in program history and followed by limiting No. 9 Texas A&M to just one goal. Dunnigan played all 180 minutes and took two shots.
• Glick SLC Goalkeeper of the Week - Senior Morgan Glick took home the first Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week honor, after helping the Ladyjacks to a 1-1 start to the 2014 season. The native of Boerne, Texas (Champion HS), anchored the SFA back line to a 2-0 shutout of Oregon State for the program’s first-ever win in program history and followed by limiting No. 9 Texas A&M to just one goal. Glick, playing every minute in goal, made 10 saves across 39 shots faced, with eight coming against the Aggies.
• Entering The Season - The Ladyjacks enter the season looking to continue the success that was achieved under Crittenden in his first season. In 2013, SFA became the first three-peat conference champions in Southland history. Along the way, the Ladyjacks matched the best regular season game win total with 15 wins, setting a new shutout record with 14 blankings of the opponent. SFA also posted its first undefeated season on the road with a 9-0-3 mark. Last season, the stout Ladyjack defense led the SLC in goals allowed (12) and shutouts (14) while offense ranked fourth in goals (44) and assists (28). SFA, which at one time led the nation in both respective statistical categories, ended the season ranked ninth nationally with a .636 shutout percentage and 10th nationally with a .520 goals against average.
• No Place Like Home - SFA owns a 105-41-12 (.707) all-time mark at home, but it has been their recent success in Nacogdoches that stands out. The Ladyjacks have posted a 32-4-0 record over last four-plus seasons at the SFA Soccer Field.
• Picked To Click – SFA was picked to win the 2014 regular-season crown in polls conducted by the league's coaches and sports information directors, the conference office announced Thursday, Aug. 14. The Ladyjacks received 11 first-place votes from the coaches and nine first-place nods from the SIDs to earn a total of 121 points in the coaches' poll and 119 in the SID poll.
• Preseason All-SLC - The Ladyjacks placed six on the 2014 preseason all-conference teams, including a league-high four on the first team, the Southland Conference office announced Wednesday, Aug. 13. Senior forwards Chelsea Raymond and Zuri Prince and sister defenders Megan Dunnigan, a senior, and Brooke Dunnigan, a sophomore, made up the first team, while junior defenders Rachel Owens and Chantal Curry each earned a spot on the second team.
