NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin head men's basketball coach Brad Underwood announced the hiring of Dylan Lockwood as the Lumberjacks' Director of Basketball Operations on Friday morning.
Lockwood will be involved with nearly all facets of the Lumberjack program, including team travel, scheduling, on campus recruiting visits and equipment, as well assisting with the day-to-day functions of the office.
"We are obviously excited to have a person with Dylan's experience," Underwood said. "He is a gentleman that has been in varying degrees of great programs at Cincinnati, Kansas State, where I first became acquainted with him, and South Carolina. To have him overseeing our operations and the day-to-day goings on, with the extreme wealth of knowledge he brings in so many areas, will really help us grow internally. He is a great fit and that knowledge he brings is also going to impact our student athletes and make things easier on us as coaches. He will impact us a great deal."
Lockwood becomes the first full-time basketball director of operations for the Lumberjacks, coming to Nacogdoches after spending 12 years in the Division I basketball ranks, working under head coaches Frank Martin, Bob Huggins and Andy Kennedy.
Lockwood spent the previous seven seasons on staff under Frank Martin at both Kansas State and South Carolina, following coach Martin to Columbia in 2012. Lockwood most recently spent both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons as the Director of Video Services for the Gamecocks, helping coordinate and implement video technology for practices, games and for opponent scouting and game preparation.
Prior to USC, Lockwood spent six years on staff at Kansas State under Bob Huggins (2006-07) and Martin (2007-12).
Lockwood was named the video coordinator at K-State prior to the 2008 season after serving the previous two campaigns as a graduate assistant. While there, Lockwood helped coordinate and implement video technology for practices, games and for opponent scouting and game preparation.
Lockwood played a key support role in helping build the K-State program during his six seasons on staff with the Wildcats. The program posted at least 20 wins each season and advanced to the postseason, including four trips to the NCAA Tournament.
The Wildcats advanced to the Postseason NIT in 2007, Lockwood's first season on staff where he served as a graduate assistant, posting an overall record of 23-12, the first of six-consecutive 20-win campaigns by K-State.
Lockwood played a role in the Wildcats posting their first NCAA Tournament victory since 1988 after posting a 21-12 overall record, including a third-place finish in the Big 12 with a 10-6 mark during the 2007-08 season. The finish in league play was the highest for the Wildcats since the inception of the league.
Lockwood was promoted to video coordinator for the 2008-09 campaign. That season, the squad posted 22 wins and earned an at-large bid to the Postseason NIT, which set the stage for a record-setting season in 2009-10, when the team posted a school-record 29 wins, en route to the program's first NCAA Tournament Elite Eight appearance in over two decades. The Wildcats defeated six ranked opponents that season, and concluded the year ranked in the Top 10 in both the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll (No. 7) and the Associated Press Top 25 Poll (No. 7).
K-State followed with two more 20-win seasons, compiling a 23-11 mark in 2010-11 and a 22-11 record during the 2011-12 season. The Wildcats advanced to the NCAA Tournament third round both years, and finished third and fifth, respectively in the Big 12 during those campaigns.
Prior to joining the K-State staff, Lockwood served as a graduate assistant under then-Cincinnati head coach Andy Kennedy from 2005-06, the program's first year in the Big East Conference. He served as a student manager for the Bearcats from 1999 to 2001 and head manager from 2003-04 under head coach Bob Huggins.
While at the University of Cincinnati, Lockwood was around the top-ranked team in the country during the 1999-2000 campaign, which saw three student-athletes taken in the NBA draft. During his four years at Cincinnati, the teams won a total of 100 games, including three Conference USA regular season and tournament titles and three trips to the NCAA Tournament, as well as one appearance in the NIT Elite Eight.
During the 12 years involved in Division I athletics between South Carolina, K-State and Cincinnati, Lockwood has been around 12 student-athletes who have either been drafted or played in the NBA, including the 2000 first overall pick Kenyon Martin, the second overall selection of the 2008 draft in Michael Beasley and the sixth pick in the 2000 draft in DerMarr Johnson. Lockwood has been around three-consensus first team All-Americans in Steve Logan and Martin at Cincinnati and Beasley at K-State.
Lockwood earned a bachelor's degree in business, specializing in sport management, from Cazenovia College in 2005. He played both soccer and basketball while attending Cazenovia. Lockwood was inducted into the Cazenovia Athletics Hall of Fame in September of 2013, as part of the 2001-2002 men's basketball team, the first men's hoops squad in Wildcat history to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
