2014 Kiawah Island Final Results
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Stephen F. Austin responded in a major way after a sluggish start in Kiawah Island, posting two of the top rounds of the weekend in rounds two and three at the Invitational at the Ocean Course. The Lumberjacks posted a 32-over 896, placing 10th among the challenging 14-team field.
After opening up the tournament with a 22-over 310 Friday, SFA rebounded with a 7-over 295 on Saturday, the sixth-best round among the field as all five Lumberjack golfers shot a 4-over 76 or better. Sunday, SFA showed an even better improvement, carding a 3-over 291, the second-best round of the final round, with all five golfers shooting a 3-over 75 or better.
Junior Luke Sheehan recorded the 12th top-20 finish of his SFA career, posting a 2-over 218 for the tournament. After an opening round 75, Sheehan shot a 1-under par 143 (72-71) over the final two rounds. He finished seven shots better than senior Blake Pugh (9-over 225), who finished the tournament with an even-par 72 Sunday to tie for 31st overall.
Sophomore Baxter had the SFA low round Saturday with a 1-over 73, then followed that up with a 3-over 75 Sunday to finish at 10-over 226 for the tournament, tying for 33rd overall. Junior Nathan Weant finished at 13-over 229 with senior Bradley Phelps rounding out the SFA scorecard with a 16-over 232.
SFA finished four strokes back of ninth-place Western Carolina (28-over 892) and just five behind eighth-place Charleston Southern (27-over 891). The ‘Jacks held a comfortable 11-stroke advantage over 11th-place UT-Arlington (43-over 907).
South Florida dominated the tournament, shooting a 14-under 850 to capture the team title by 17 strokes over Georgia State (13-over 877). Georgia Southern (15-over 879) placed third with Troy (18-over 882) and Kentucky (19-over 883) rounding out the top-five.
SFA now will take nearly a month-long hiatus before heading to Bryan for the Miramont Invitational, being held October 13-14, an event being hosted by Rice.
