NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women’s volleyball team was swept in straight sets, falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-17) to North Texas in the 2014 home opener inside Shelton Gym on Labor Day.
Senior Jill Ivy paced the Ladyjacks (1-3) against UNT (3-1), picking up her second double-double of the season. The native of Katy, Texas, finished with 10 kills and 11 digs, as SFA was held to just a .149 attack percentage on the evening.
Senior Paige Holland recorded a season-high 21 assists across three sets.
The Ladyjacks traded points with the Mean Green to open the match, quickly taking a 3-1 lead on a pair of attack errors. However, UNT responded with three straight points to take a 4-3 edge, before another attack error by the Mean Green evened the match at four-all. After, UNT responded with a kill from Mikali Myers to reclaim a one-point edge (5-4), the Mean Green never relinquished the lead again, taking the first set 25-17.
UNT quickly pressed again in the second set, taking a 6-0 lead, before SFA made a push. The Ladyjacks rallied from the early deficit, going on a 15-9 run to tie the match before an attack error by the Mean Green gave SFA a 16-15 edge. The lead would be short-lived however, as four straight Ladyjack attack errors swung the momentum back to UNT, who won 25-21 to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
In the third set, the Ladyjacks were limited to a .128 clip, their lowest of the match, in falling 25-17 to complete the sweep.
SFA will now take the road for their second tournament of the season this weekend. The Ladyjacks will face South Dakota State, Valparaiso and UMKC, in the South Dakota Tournament in Brookings, South Dakota.
