NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin track and field coach Phil Olson named his most valuable athletes on Monday. Following the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, Olson honored Colton Ross and Brarysheyia Simpson as the team’s top athletes for the 2014 season.
Ross broke the school record in the pole vault this year at the Longhorn Invitational with a mark of 5.70 meters (18-8.25). That mark also ranks No. 1 in the NCAA this year heading into the championship meet and is tied for fifth in the world so far.
At the Southland Conference Championship, Ross set a new conference meet record with a clearance of 5.56 meters (18-2.75) to win the title. He won five of his seventh meets prior to this weekend’s NCAA West Preliminary Rounds. Ross also won the Southland Conference indoor title.
Simpson was a force in the sprints for SFA this season as she finished second in the 100 meters at the Southland Conference Championship outdoors. She took second in the 60, 200 and 400 at the conference indoor championship meet. She broke the school record in the 60 and 200 indoors. Last week at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds, Simpson ran on the women’s 4x400 relay as well.
Ross’ team honor comes on the heels of being recognized by the Southland Conference as its Field Events Athlete of the Year outdoors.
Ross along with six of his teammates are preparing for the NCAA Championships next week. Ross will compete on Day 1 at the meet in the pole vault. The Lumberjacks have five entries in the championship meet set to start June 11 in Eugene, Oregon.
