NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Two days worth of action brought home one team victory for the Stephen F. Austin women's track and field team, and the men's team finished second in scoring at the Skechers Carl Kight Invitational.
The Ladyjacks were in a tight battle with the Wichita State Shockers throughout the meet and put the final nail in the coffin with a victory in the 4x400 meter relay.
With SFA leading Wichita State by only 3.5 points heading into the final event, the Ladyjacks crossed the line first in 3:42.82. Wichita State was close behind in 3:47.41 but it was SFA that got the women's team victory.
The men's squad finished second behind Wichita State as 18 teams were in action at the meet this weekend at Homer Bryce Stadium. The Shockers scored 182 points to SFA's 141 as both teams dominated the meet throughout the weekend.
After posting the No. 3 time in the nation last week, SFA's men's 4x400 won again. This time the Lumberjacks cruised to the easy win in 3:11.91.
Cass Brown-Stewart ran the anchor leg again for the men and made his outdoor open 400 meters debut. He blazed around the track in 47.30 seconds to rank 13th in the NCAA.
SFA's women won a total of seven events on Saturday alone, getting points in a variety of areas and displaying their team depth.
Jessica Spelling opened the day with a win in the women's shot put. Her mark of 14.37 meters (47-1.25) bested the field and just edged teammate La'Tricia Griffin in second place. Griffin posted a throw of 4.13 meters (46-4.25).
The Ladyjacks won another throwing event with Madison Johnston again posting a victory for SFA. Johnston dominated the field with a throw of 47.79 meters (156-9), short of her own school record set earlier this season.
SFA's women defeated the competition in the 4x100 relay as well to give SFA a clean sweep in the relays at the Carl Kight Invitational. The Ladyjacks ran 46.10 for their fastest time of the season in the event.
Stephanie White won the first open running event of the day as she held off a charge by the field to win the 100 meter hurdles. White finished in 14.09 seconds, just off her PR set last week at the Texas Relays.
The next victory of the day for the Ladyjacks came in the women's 100 meters with Chasity Clark running the straightaway in 11.84 seconds.
Sprinter Brarysheyia Simpson made her open event debut for the outdoor season after running only on relays in the first two weeks of the season. She easily won the 200 meters with a time of 24.26 seconds.
On the day the men's team won two other events with Brown-Stewart teaming up with Hampton Hawkins, Trevon Caudle and Jared Love to win the 4x100 relay. Their time of 40.51 seconds ranks 27th in the nation as well so far this season.
Josh Taylor continued his dominance in the 400 meter hurdles this season winning another meet. Taylor crossed the line in 51.87 seconds, marking the first time this season he has not posted a personal record.
In addition to all the victories on Saturday, SFA tallied seven runner-up finishes as well.
The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks will head to San Antonio next week for a two-day meet hosted by Southland Conference newcomer Incarnate Word.
