HAMMOND, La. – Looking for their first series win on the road, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks will have one more try this weekend after splitting the first two games at Southeasetern Louisiana on Friday evening. SFA won the first game 2-1 with some late scoring action and dropped the second game of the doubleheader 9-1.
Carlie Thomas threw a complete game to get the 2-1 victory as she struck out 10 batters and walked none. She allowed only three hits in the win, unfortunately one of those hits was a solo home run in the seventh inning.
That run was all the Lions could muster against Thomas and the two runs the Ladyjacks scored in the fifth were enough.
SFA (18-23, 9-9) got a bunt single from Alisa Hamilton to start the inning off. After stealing second, she advanced to third on a passed ball. That play put two runners in scoring position with Shalie Day reaching earlier on a walk. Brittany Lewis walked to then load the bases for Cadie Weaver. She singled to left to drive in Hamilton and Day to take the 2-0 lead.
The Ladyjacks tallied six hits in the first game of the day with Hamilton leading the way at 3-for-4. SLU (16-22, 8-12) got only three hits.
Game two of the doubleheader saw the Lions find their stroke at the plate and post nine runs in five innings to split the day.
With the game tied 0-0 in the bottom of the third, Megan Moore hit a grand slam with two outs to go up 4-0.
Day tried to get a rally started for the Ladyjacks with a solo homer of her own, but that was all the scoring SFA could put together.
SLU added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth on three hits and an error.
The series finale is set for noon on Saturday. SFA will be looking to get is first series win on the road this season with a victory. Fans can follow the action online with live stats at lionsports.com. Updates will also be on the official @SFA_Softball handle on Twitter.
