NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Former Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball head coach Joe Curl passed away early Monday morning after a lengthy battle with heart disease at the age of 59.
In his only season as head coach of the Ladyjacks, Curl led SFA to a Southland Conference title and the NCAA Tournament. The Ladyjacks went 23-7 that year and lost to Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Curl later went on to become the winningest head women’s basketball coach at the University of Houston. His teams won 193 games during his 12 seasons at Houston and went to five postseasons, including advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2004 after a school record 28 victories.
“During his short time here, Coach Curl helped keep Ladyjacks basketball atop the Southland Conference as a dominant force in the decade guiding SFA to another conference championship,” said SFA Athletics Senior Women’s Administrator Loree McCary. “We are sorry to hear of his passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.”
