SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A small group of Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks made quite an impact at the UIW Invitational this weekend as the women’s track and field team won the meet and the men came in second without participating in a number of events.
The women’s team posted six victories on Saturday, dominating the sprinting events. Chasity Clark won the 200 meters with a wind-aided time of 24.28 seconds. Brarysheyia Simpson added another win in the 400 meters with a personal record of 54.89 seconds. Stephanie White claimed victory in the 100 meter hurdles with teammates Bria McIver and Tiare Dugger finishing right behind her in second and third place.
SFA swept the 4x100 meter relays with the men crossing the line in 40.94 seconds. The women’s group finished in 46.18 seconds, just off their season’s best pace a week ago.
In addition to the 4x100 victory, the Lumberjacks added wins in the 200 and 400 meters. Cass Brown-Stewart cruised to a win in 21.14 seconds in the 200. The time was slightly faster than his previous best but was wind-aided. Hampton Hawkins claimed the win in the 400 meters, running his lap in 47.61 seconds.
The meet was a team scored meet with the Ladyjacks winning with a total of 156 points despite not participating in the distance events and a few others as well. SFA’s distance runners had the weekend off for the women and men. The Lumberjacks finished second with 138 points and again with limited entries.
SFA’s men’s pole vaulters were in Austin on Saturday at the Texas Invitational and all three performed well.
Colton Ross tied for second in the field with a clearance of 5.31 meters (17-05.00). Cameron Meyer also cleared 5.31 meters but was in fifth place based on misses at earlier heights. His clearance was a personal best and is 21st in the NCAA this season. Freshman Daven Murphree had his best showing as a Lumberjack, finishing ninth at 5.21 meters (17-01.00) and he now ranks in the top 30 in the nation.
SFA will be at the Central Arkansas Open next weekend for a two-day meet to get a feel for the facility that will host the Southland Conference Championship. A small group of distance runners will be competing at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays where the best distance runners in the nation traditionally meet in mid-April.
