NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin senior kicker Jordan Wiggs has been named the Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, announced today by the league office. He then notched an impressive resume booster, being named The Sports Network FCS Co-Special Teams National Player of the Week later in the day.
Wiggs was instrumental in helping SFA reclaim Chief Caddo Saturday night as the Lumberjacks downed border rival Northwestern State 27-24. The senior opened up the night by hitting a 20-yard field goal for the Lumberjacks, then recorded three extra points on SFA’s three touchdown strikes.
But playing in his final home game, the senior saved his best for last, drilling a 41-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Lumberjacks to the victory. It was Wiggs’ first career game-winning field goal on only his second opportunity – the first of which came last week against Abilene Christian as he got an opportunity for redemption.
The field goal pushed Wiggs’ career point total to 348 as he continues to distance himself as SFA’s all-time leading scorer, sitting fourth all-time in SLC history. Wiggs ranks first in conference history in PATs attempted (187) and made (180), third all-time in career field goal percentage (72.73%) and is tied for fourth all-time in career field goals made (56). A three-time honorable mention All-SLC selection, Wiggs picks up the second weekly accolade of his career.
He becomes the fifth different Lumberjack to be named an SLC Player of the Week this season, joining Gus Johnson (Sept. 8 and Oct. 25), Nick Bruno (Oct. 25), Zach Conque (Nov. 10) and Lance Skyler (Nov. 10).
Wiggs and the rest of the Lumberjacks are now preparing for their first NCAA postseason appearance since 2010 as the ‘Jacks will take on Northern Iowa in the first round of the 2014 FCS Championship. Opening kick against the Panthers is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the UNI Dome in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
