
SFA Rebounds To Sit Sixth at Hawk Classic

MILLSBORO, Del. – Stephen F. Austin sits sixth among the challenging 18 team field after the opening day of the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawk Classic. The Ladyjacks went 3-3 on the day, accumulating 5,677 total pins over the six baker-style matches.
SFA opened the day with a 910-830 loss to 14th-ranked LIU-Brooklyn, then stumbled against North Carolina A&T, dropping a 1,080-972 decision. The morning struggles continued against 10th-ranked St. Francis (Pa.) as SFA fell 998-966, sitting at 0-3 after the morning session.
But the Ladyjacks rebounded in the afternoon session, beginning with a 925-871 win over Adelphi, followed by a 921-771 rout of 12th-ranked Kutztown. SFA then closed out the day with a dominating 1,063-833 win over Franklin Pierce to even its record at 3-3, thanks to games of 259 and 256, its highest of the day.
SFA heads into Saturday’s traditional games trailing fifth-place UMES (5,698) as the host Hawks went 2-4 on the day. Fairleigh Dickinson leads the team standings at 4-2 with 6,110 total pins, followed by Sam Houston State’s 5,937 total pins and 5-1 mark. North Carolina A&T (5,909) sits third with a 6-0 record and Vanderbilt (5,746) currently checks in at fourth at 2-4.
The Ladyjacks now prepare for six traditional matches Saturday, beginning with a showdown with fifth-ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore. Norfolk State, Sacred Heart, St. Francis-Brooklyn and Fairleigh Dickinson are also on the Saturday slate for SFA.
