FRISCO, Texas - Coming off its victory over sixth-ranked McNeese State Saturday, Stephen F. Austin had a pair of players named Southland Conference Players of the Week, announced today by the league office. Quarterback Zach Conque was named the Offensive POW with defensive tackle Lance Skyler picking up the Defensive nod.
Conque led an efficient Lumberjack offensive attack Saturday evening, completing 21 of his 23 passes (91.3%) for 201 yards, no interceptions and three touchdowns. He threw touchdown strikes of 26, 11 and one yard, while also catching a seven yard touchdown pass from Tyler Boyd in the second quarter. On the ground, Conque rushed 10 times for 31 yards, giving him 239 yards of offense on the night while playing a part in all four of SFA's touchdowns.
Skyler anchored the Lumberjack defensive unit which held the vaunted McNeese State rushing attack to just 140 yards on the night. He led the team with six tackles, including five solo, with 3.5 sacks on the night, setting a new career-best. His second sack came on third down, thwarting a possible Cowboy scoring drive in the third quarter, and then he recorded back-to-back sacks on third and fourth down on McNeese's final drive, sealing the victory for the Lumberjacks.
It is the first Player of the Week honors for both Conque and Skyler in their careers as they become the third and fourth Lumberjacks to pick up SLC weekly honors this season. Running back Gus Johnson has been named the Offensive POW twice already this season (Sept. 10 and Oct. 27) with Nick Bruno earning Special Teams honors on Oct. 27 as well.
Central Arkansas kicker Eddie Camara was named the Special Teams Player of the Week after hitting the game-winning field goal in overtime to defeat Lamar. SFA kicker Jordan Wiggs was named an honorable mention selection.
Conque, Skyler and the rest of the Lumberjacks continue their quest for an SLC championship and a possible NCAA berth beginning a two-game season-ending home stand this weekend. Up first for SFA is a meeting with former Lone Star Conference rival Abilene Christian, kicking off Saturday at 3 p.m.
