VERO BEACH, Fla. - Paced by a 6-under 282, Stephen F. Austin vaulted from eighth to fourth over the final round of the Quail Valley Intercollegiate. The Lumberjacks closed out the 54-hole event with a 10-under 854, the fifth-best 54-hole score in program history and the second-straight tournament SFA has finished under par.
Entering the day in eighth place, SFA posted the third-lowest round of the 15-team field, moving four spots and leapfrogging a handful of competitive programs to notch its second-straight top-five finish. It is the seventh-straight sub-300 round for the Lumberjacks who shot under par in five of the last six rounds.
SFA was led by junior Luke Sheehan who tied for seventh overall with an impressive 5-under 211, highlighted by his 3-under 69 over the final 18 holes. It marks the sixth top-10 finish for Sheehan who was par-or-better (70-72-69) in every round of the Quail Valley Intercollegiate.
Senior Blake Pugh matched Sheehan's 3-under 69 over the final 18 holes, finishing tied for 15th overall with a 3-under 213. It is the 21st top-20 finish of Pugh's career as he was strong over the final 36 holes, shooting a 6-under 138 after an opening round 75.
Junior Nathan Weant also finished the event under par, shooting a 1-under 215 and tying for 20th in the individual standings. Weant got the `Jacks off on the right foot with a 5-under 67 in the opening round, then bookended his performance with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday.
Sophomores Cory Brown and Baxter Ward rounded out the SFA scorecard as Brown posted a 6-over 222 (73-76-73) while Ward carded a 7-over 223 (71-74-78).
The Lumberjacks' strong showing over the final 18 holes helped SFA reach the top-five, besting fifth-place McNeese State (7-under 857) by three shots after the Cowboys posted a 3-over 291 over the final round. The `Jacks were four shots better than sixth-place Kentucky (6-under 858) while besting both Jacksonville and TCU (5-under 859) by five shots.
North Florida captured the team title with an impressive 24-under 840, defeating second place Tennessee (18-under 846) by six strokes. Michigan State did enough to stay one stroke ahead of SFA, closing out the tournament with an 11-under 853 with the Lumberjacks and Cowboys rounding out the top-five.
With the close of the Quail Valley Intercollegiate, the fall portion of SFA's 2014-15 season comes to a close. The Lumberjacks had some strong showings against quality competition in the fall, recording a pair of top-five team finishes. Individually, SFA saw four golfers record top-10 finishes with an additional five top-20 showings as the Lumberjacks will return to the course in February aiming at their goal of a Southland Conference championship.
