Ladyjacks Third After Day One in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Stephen F. Austin had a strong showing over the first day of the All State Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Intercollegiate. The Ladyjacks went 3-1 competing in team baker matches with a pair of 1,000-pin performances, and currently sit third in the team standings with 4,817 total pins.
SFA opened up the day with a convincing 1,029-818 victory over Florida A&M, winning four of the five games. The Ladyjacks bowled a match-high 232 in game five along with a 231 in game three.
Up next was another convincing victory, taking down Alabama-Birmingham 1,008 to 862. SFA bowled its high game of the day in game three, posting a 233 in game three, while totaling a 220 in game one as the Ladyjacks won three of the five games.
SFA then outlasted Alabama A&M, edging the Lady Bulldogs 900-879 in match three. The Ladyjacks jumped out early in the first three games, building a 559-535 lead. Alabama A&M won game four 173-155, pulling to within five at 714-709, but SFA responded by taking the final game 186-171 to close out the victory.
The final match of the day pitted SFA against rival Sam Houston State, last season’s NCAA champions. The Ladyjacks dropped four of the five matches to the Bearkats, falling 975-924 to close out the opening day of the tournament.
SFA’s 4,817 total pins on the day puts the Ladyjacks third, 133 behind second-place Sam Houston in the team standings. Fourth-ranked Vanderbilt leads with a perfect 4-0 record after day one with 5,011 total pins.
Saturday the teams will compete in five traditional matches, getting underway at 9 a.m. The Ladyjacks have a challenging schedule over day two, facing Bethune-Cookman in the opening round before going head-to-head against Texas Southern, Alabama State, Vanderbilt and Jackson State.
