BRYAN, Texas - After weathering a nearly six-hour delay to start the Miramont Invitational, Stephen F. Austin closed out the opening round tied for 11th overall with a 15-over 303. The Lumberjacks finally took to the course at around 1:30 this afternoon as the event was shortened to just 36 holes due to the inclement weather.
The Lumberjacks currently sit in a three-way tie for 11th with Houston Baptist and Louisiana-Monroe, but are well within striking distance of a handful of teams. SFA is just four shots back of fifth-place as nine teams are separated by those four strokes, including Southland Conference foes Southeastern Louisiana (11-over 299) and McNeese State (13-over 301).
A pair of `Jacks are currently sitting among the top-20 of the individual standings, led by senior Blake Pugh's 1-over 73, good enough for a tie for 12th overall. He holds a one shot lead on sophomore Baxter Ward who currently is tied for 19th with a 2-over 74.
Junior Luke Sheehan posted a 3-over 75 and is tied for 28th among the 76-player field. Junior Nathan Weant posted a 9-over 81 while freshman Tony Underwood shot a 13-over 85 in his first collegiate round.
Houston holds the team lead after the opening 18 holes with a 3-under 285, leading second-place Sam Houston State (2-over 290) by five shots. Texas State (8-over 296) and UT-San Antonio (9-over 297) sit third and fourth with UT-Arlington and Southeastern Louisiana (11-over 299) tied for fifth.
Tuesday's final round gets underway at 8 a.m. from Miramont Country Club in Bryan with SFA teeing off on holes 15-18. The Lumberjacks will be paired up Houston Baptist as well as those competing as individuals over the final 18 holes.
