FRISCO, Texas – For a second straight year the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks soccer team placed six student-athletes on the Southland Conference preseason all-conference teams, including four first-teamers the league office announced on Tuesday.
The six preseason all-conference selections was tops in the league as was the four first-teamers. Earning first-team honors for SFA is senior goalkeeper Lacey Lee, junior forwards Zuri Prince and Chelsea Raymond, and junior defender Megan Dunnigan.
“It is always an honor when opposing coaches recognize you as a player,” SFA head coach Wally Crittenden said. “The ability to make an impact on a match to the degree that another coach will remember your name and abilities should be a goal that all players strive to achieve. It is the ultimate compliment. The fact that our program has six players between the two teams is very impressive and should be appreciated, though these players will be the first to give thanks to their teammates, to the athletic department for its investments and resources, and to Stephen F. Austin State University for creating an environment that promotes success.”
Lee and Dunnigan will help anchor an SFA defense that was one of the toughest in the country last season. Lee, a native of Bedford, Texas, ranked second in the nation in goals-against average (0.42) and fourth in save percentage (.887) while notching 10 shutouts in the net last year.
Dunnigan, out of Round Rock, Texas, helped lead the back line of the Ladyjack defense that allowed only 13 goals on the season in 2012 and ranked 13th nationally with a .0624 goals-against average, which included 13 shutouts.
Leading the Ladyjacks’ offensive attack this season are Raymond and Prince. Raymond, a native of Irving, Texas, led SFA in total points (29) for a second consecutive season after scoring a team-best 13 goals in 2012 along with three assists. Prince, from Beaumont, Texas, was the SLC Tournament most valuable player and recorded 19 points last season on seven goals and five assists. Prince also ranked tied for 17th in the nation with five game-winning goals.
The Ladyjacks also placed two student-athletes on the second team with senior midfielder Brenda Salazar and sophomore defender Chantal Curry.
Salazar, a native of Sugar Land, Texas, played in all 21 games last season and scored three goals while recording two assists for eight total points and will be one of four seniors on this year’s squad.
Curry, out of Austin, Texas, appeared in every game last season and was a key contributor to SFA’s stout defense as just a freshman.
SFA returns nine starters to a team that set a school-record with wins in a single season after posting a 17-4-0 overall record and a perfect 8-0-0 mark in conference play last season.
