NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Now that the school year is over, and before we begin the 2013-14 academic year, SFA athletics wanted to take a look back at the Top 25 Moments from the 2012-13 season.
No. 3
There is no way we could have done a top-25 list and not included sophomore running back Gus Johnson's performance against Central Arkansas. It was not only one of the top moments of the school year, but it was one of top individual performances in the nation last season.
Despite facing a nationally ranked foe in Central Arkansas, the game was played in a constant downpour throughout the evening. The weather conditions forced SFA from its air raid offense to rely more on the run, and Johnson took advantage of the opportunity.
The Gilmer, Texas native, rushed for a then career-high 215 yards rushing, and four touchdowns on 32 carries. Behind Johnson's dominating performance SFA went on to upset the Bears, 42-37, handing UCA its only Southland loss of the season.
The 'Jacks rolled up 467 yards of total offense against the Southland Conference leaders, nearly half of which came from Johnson. As a team, the Bears were only able to record two more yards of total offense than Johnson on the night.
Johnson's performance on the field was the sixth-best individual rushing performance in school history. It was also the most rushing yards recorded by a Lumberjack since Derrick Blaylock carried the ball for 218 yards against A&M Commerce in 2000.
For his efforts, Johnson was named the SLC Offensive Player of the Week, and a College Sporting News National Weekly All-Star. A 2012 first-team All-SLC selection, Johnson closed out the season by setting a new career high in rushing yards against Northwestern State, posting 226 yards on 33 carries.
