NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The culmination of four years of hard work and sacrifice were realized Saturday afternoon on the Stephen F. Austin campus as 38 former student-athletes and managers walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. In a switch from normal graduation protocol, the university held two separate graduation ceremonies compared to only one in previous years.
"We are in the world of athletics to win, but our primary goal is to see our athletes graduate," said Director of Athletics Robert Hill. "I'm very proud of each and everyone of these individuals who take care of their responsibilities on the field and in classroom. It is always great to be able to see our student-athletes celebrate this time with family and friends."
Twelve different teams were represented at the spring commencement led by the track and field and cross country teams. The SFA women's team had eight graduating, while the men's cross country and track and field teams produced four. The Lumberjack baseball team led all men's sports with six graduates. The SFA football, soccer and softball team each had three representatives, while the Ladyjack volleyball team graduated three.
The Ladyjack bowling team, which has been a varsity sport at SFA for four seasons watched its first two graduates walk across the stage. The Lumberjack basketball team, golf team and Ladyjack tennis team each had one representative.
