NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin men’s basketball team placed three Lumberjacks in double-figures in head coach Brad Underwood’s debut as head coach in an 87-54 exhibition victory over Arkansas Tech Friday night in William R. Johnson Coliseum.
SFA improved to 7-1 in their last eight exhibition openers and 1-0 under the new regime.
The ’Jacks outscored the ATU 30-4 in second-chance points in what nearly proved to be the margin of difference in the game.
Junior Jacob Parker led the SFA with 17 points, hitting six of 12 shots of the field and all five from the charity stripe. Sophomore Thomas Walkup, finished one off of Parker, with 16 points and freshman Dallas Cameron added 11.
The ’Jacks led in nearly every statistical category and, even though it was a exhibition, put up their most points offensively since scoring 84 in the 2012-13 season opener.
The Wonder Boys took a 2-0 lead on a layup from Kendall Pinkney, but SFA responded with a three-pointer from senior Nikola Gajic to take a 3-2 lead. SFA then went on a 12-3 run to build a double-digit cushion that would span the remainder of the first half. The ‘Jacks were nearly .500 in all three shooting categories (field goals, three-point field goals, free throws) en route to a 49-31 lead at half.
The double-figure lead never wavered and spanned the entire second half as SFA cruised to an 87-54 final.
The ‘Jacks will now prepare for the regular season opener. SFA will take on UT-Tyler Friday, Nov. 8, at 7:00 p.m.
