NACOGDOCHES, Texas - On the heels of a successful #ShowUrAxe social media push, Stephen F. Austin athletics is launching its #BattleAxe campaign, which will end in one lucky Lumberjack fan taking part in the football team's pregame entry at the Battle of the Piney Woods.
Similar to the #ShowUrAxe campaign, fans are encouraged to send in pictures of their decorated axe handles with the picture receiving the most likes/shares/retweets on Facebook and Twitter winning the chance to chop the log on the field at Reliant Stadium before the Battle of the Piney Woods, signaling the entry of the football team to the field.
"We were extremely impressed with the response we got from our fans for the ShowUrAxe campaign we did this summer," Assistant Director of Media Relations Ben Rikard said. "Now that we are in the midst of the fall season we wanted to do something that not only highlighted one of our year's biggest events, but also incorporated such a fun tradition we have here at SFA with the axe handles. "
"Student Activities and others on campus have done a great job of involving the incoming freshmen with the axe handles, and hopefully this encourages them, and all other Lumberjacks, to be a part of it as well." Fans are encouraged to use the hashtag #BattleAxe when either tweeting in their pictures to @SFA_Athletics on Twitter or by emailing them HERE for placement in an album on the SFA Athletics Facebook page.
From there fans can view photos of all of the axe handles that have been submitted, and "like" or "share" those photos on Facebook. Each interactions will count as a vote for that particular picture, with the picture receiving the most interaction winning the chance to be on the field at Reliant Stadium on October 6 when the `Jacks take on Sam Houston State.
