FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin freshman middle blocker Cara Leslie was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week after conference officials announced the selection Monday afternoon.
This is the first time in Leslie's career she has won a weekly honor and makes her the second Ladyjack this year, along with Madison Hanlan, to claim a weekly award form the league. She is the first SFA freshman since Lauren Railey in 2005 to win SLC offensive player of the week.
Leslie had a breakout week for the Ladyjacks, earning all-tournament honors at the Chilly Fillmore's Invitational and helping SFA to three wins and the tournament title.
The true freshman averaged 3.55 kills per set in the three matches, hitting a gaudy .455 on 66 swings. She hit no lower than .440 in each of the three wins, starting with 10 kills, six blocks and a .471 attack percentage in a conference-opening win over Northwestern State.
Leslie followed that by hitting .458 with 14 kills in a sweep of Robert Morris, before rejecting four shots and adding 15 kills and a .440 attack percentage in a four-set win over Southern Mississippi.
Leslie and the Ladyjacks continue conference play on Tuesday against Sam Houston State at 6:30 p.m. before taking on McNeese State and Lamar over the weekend.
