NACOGDOCHES, Texas - After a slow start to the 2011 season which bumped Stephen F. Austin from top 25 last season, most prognosticators are expecting the Lumberjacks to be back in the hunt in 2012. The 'Jacks have been ranked among the nation's top 25 in four different preseason polls, with a few still waiting to be released. The only thing that varies between the polls is where SFA will finish.
The Lumberjacks were the unanimous pick to finish second in the Southland Conference according the preseason poll of league coaches and sports information directors, but the top 25 pollsters can't seem to agree. The 'Jacks enter the season ranked as high as 13th and as low as 25th.
Athlon's Magazine has SFA ranked 23rd nationally, while Lindy's has them at No. 16. Phil Steele's Magazine ranks the Lumberjacks 13th and the College Sporting News lists SFA 25th. The Sports Network Top 25 is a major poll that will be released later this month.
The Lumberjacks kick off the 2012 season Thursday, Aug. 30 against Southwestern Oklahoma. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
