GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Sabrina Burns surpassed her career high for the second time this season, but Green Bay rallied to win the final two sets and steal a 3-2 (23-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 15-11) win over Stephen F. Austin on the opening day of the UND Classic.
Burns hit .424 and put down 19 kills on 33 swings, in addition to four blocks, but the rest of the Ladyjack (3-2) squad hit just .063 for the match; meanwhile, the Phoenix (2-3) swung at a .291 clip for the match which included hitting no less than .286 in four of the five sets.
Madison Hanlan added 29 digs to her season total to lead four Ladyjacks in double-figure digs, and Jill Ivy and Keeley Kainer had 11 kills apiece. Katzy Randall, Tori Bates and Janet Hill also each totaled 11 digs.
For the Phoenix, Lyndsay Zabkowicz led all players with 22 kills and a pair of blocks.
SFA hit .220 in the first set and scored three of the final five points to hang on for an early 1-0 lead before Green Bay returned the favor, hitting .433 in the second set in knotting things up 1-1.
Burns and Ivy then each had four kills in the third set, and Kainer and Cara Leslie added three apiece as the Ladyjacks held off the Phoenix for a two-point edge to put itself on the verge of a victory; however, the Ladyjacks could not maintain the momentum in the fourth set, committing nine attack errors while UWGB put down 15 kills to force a deciding fifth set.
Green Bay then carried its momentum over, jumping out to a 8-2 lead and holding on, despite SFA outscoring them 9-7 the rest of the way.
SFA will try and snap its two-match losing streak tomorrow when it takes on South Dakota before getting its shot at host North Dakota in the tournament finale.
