NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The first week of preseason camp is nearly in the books, and Stephen F. Austin will close out the week with its first of three planned scrimmages Sunday at 6:30 at Homer Bryce Stadium. The stadium has been closed during preseason camp, but the scrimmage will be open to fans who are looking to get their first glimpse of the 2012 Lumberjacks.
"This is a great group of guys to be around," said head coach J.C. Harper. "They enjoy being around one another, and work hard every day. The important thing for us is to stay healthy and use this scrimmage to get better as a team."
The first week of practice has seen some big moments on both sides of the ball. The 'Jacks have seen a steady rotation of the receivers making big plays, followed by the defense cutting in front of receivers for interceptions, but the most impressive performances may be from the running back positions. The running backs have showed a toughness early in practice that fans of the purple and white haven't seen in years. They have provided a steady combination of speed and power that has made them hard to bring down.
SFA will look to pick up in 2012 where it left off last season. The Lumberjacks closed out the year as one of the hottest teams in the country winning five consecutive games for its third-straight winning season. SFA enters the 2012 campaign ranked among the nation's top 25 in several different polls.
When the Lumberjacks begin their second week of practice Monday the stadium will return to its normal hours of being closed in the evenings from 6 - 10 p.m.
