LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team has been picked to finish second in the Southland Conference announced league officials Tuesday morning at the SLC Media Kickoff Event in Lake Charles, La. Defending conference champion Sam Houston State has been picked to repeat as conference champions.
The Lumberjacks received one first-place vote and 39 points to place second in the head coaches’ poll, while SFA received 38 points to place second in a poll of the league’s sports information directors. The lone remaining first-place vote in the SID poll went to Central Arkansas, who finished second in the conference standings and advanced to the NCAA FCS playoffs for the first time in school history last season.
The Lumberjacks finished the season with a 6-5 overall record last season, marking their third consecutive winning season. But after a 1-5 start, the ’Jacks’ rallied behind one of the nation’s most intimidating defenses to win their final five games of the season, going 5-2 in conference play to finish third. SFA closed out the season leading the nation in sacks, tackles for losses and pass protection.
The Lumberjacks will open the 2012 campaign Thursday, Aug. 30th against Southwestern Oklahoma. The game against SWOU is slated to kick off at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
