CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi starting pitcher Greta Cecchetti threw a complete game, one-hit shutout to help the Islanders defeat the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (11-26, 2-9) 1-0 Friday afternoon.
Along with 10 strikeouts, Cecchetti’s only base runners allowed were a fourth inning single to Faith Hoisager and walks to Bethany Brown and Elizabeth Arana.
The Islanders (14-16, 9-4) lone run came in the first inning with all the damage coming after two outs were recorded in the inning. After SFA starting pitcher Angela White got back-to-back ground outs, she then walked second baseman Sandy Schumann to extend the inning. Following a fielding error by White, Cassie Carroll hit what would be a game-winning RBI single up the middle to plate Schumann.
White was the hard-luck losing pitcher, falling to 5-13 in the circle. The junior allowed just the one earned run on six hits, four hits and four walks in six innings of work. Cecchetti improved to 8-4 with her victory.
The Ladyjacks and Islanders will be back in action tomorrow at 12 p.m.
