NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The No. 43 Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team recorded its fifth shutout of the season Wednesday afternoon with a 7-0 victory over McNeese State at the Schlief Tennis Complex in Nacogdoches. The 'Jacks are 16-2 (.889) on the season, and remain atop the Southland Conference standings with a 7-0 record. SFA also extended its win streak to 14 matches.
In addition to the team's win streak, SFA has been just as impressive in doubles play. The 'Jacks have lost the doubles point only once during the 2012 season, which is a span of 14-straight matches. SFA has swept all three doubles matches 10 times this season, while there have been two matches where doubles was not played.
"We are always happy to pick up a win," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. "I was really happy that our girls came out and focused on playing every point. Our greatest strength is our depth. We've got eight good players, and ever since the match at Tulane we've been playing all eight. It's great to know that if you have a player that does go down, you've got the ability to throw someone else out there and they will perform."
SFA dominated the doubles points winning all three matches and surrendering only two games in the three matches. The 'Jacks switched up their doubles lineups moving senior Alina Shazhko and sophomore Jithmie Jayawickrema from their normal No. 2 up to the No. 1 spot, while freshman Malena Gordo and Julia Lorca took care of business at No. 2 doubles. The momentum carried over into singles play as SFA won all six matches in straight sets. SFA surrenderded only one game, or less, in eight of the 12 sets.
The 'Jacks will be back in action Friday when they travel to Houston Friday to take on Missouri. The match against the Tigers is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
