The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team recorded a 6-1 decision over Colorado Sunday afternoon in Houston, Texas. The victory moves the 'Jacks to 4-2 (.667) on the young season.
"It's always tough to bounce back from an emotional win like the one we had yesterday," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. "I felt we did a really good job getting up for this match. Obviously, playing a Pac 12 school made it a bit easier to be motivated and we did a great job of asserting ourselves early. This is a great win, and a great weekend for our program. We're definitely excited about the direction of the program."
For a second consecutive day, the 'Jacks' doubles play was strong giving SFA an early 1-0 advantage. The 'Jacks surrendered only eight games in the three doubles matches. SFA's duo of senior Alina Shazhko and Jithmie Jayawickrema defeated the 21st-ranked tandem of Winde Janssens and Carla Manzi Tenorio, 8-4. It is the second win over a nationally ranked opponent for Shazko and Jayawickrema this season.
It was the bottom part of the 'Jacks' singles lineup that held the momentum from doubles play. Freshman Malena Gordo defeated the Buffs' Ania Anuszkiewicz, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 singles to give SFA a 2-0 lead. Junior Antonia Kolovou added to that lead when she knocked off Colorado's Carla Manzi Tenorio, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
Freshman Tereza Bekerova locked up the victory with her win at No. 1 singles, before the Buffaloes could crack the scoreboard. The Buffs' win at the No. 2 spot would be the only point Colorado would score all day as SFA closed out the scoring with wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles respectively.
Despite playing back-to-back tough matches, SFA continued its dominating ways Sunday. The 'Jacks outscored their opponents 13-1 in the two victories over the weekend.
The 'Jacks will get nearly two weeks off before returning to action Saturday, Feb. 11, against Arkansas-Little Rock. The match against the Trojans is slated to begin 10 a.m., and will precede the conference opener against Central Arkansas later that day.
